Gaithersburg, MD (PRWEB) January 04, 2012

On Monday, January 9, M&T Bank will open another signature eco-friendly branch in Maryland with the opening of the Diamond Farms location in Gaithersburg, located at 5 Bank Street across from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

?Our new Diamond Farms office is a great enhancement to our extensive branch network in Montgomery County and it?s also friendly to the environment,? said Stephen Heine, M&T Bank?s Greater Washington Market Manager. ?We believe our customers will enjoy the modern look and feel of the branch while we all will benefit from the reduction of our carbon footprint.?

The contemporary look of the new M&T branch fuses traditional bank design with environmentally friendly elements. A signature look of the architectural design is the colonnade with high canopy intended to reduce direct sunlight into the branch.

The branch was constructed to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards (LEED) established by the U.S. Green Building Council and includes a number of environmentally friendly features to make it a more comfortable place for customers to bank and employees to work including:

Homemade Swimming Pool Solar Heating System

January 13th, 2012 14 comments

I’ve uploaded this for interest only. I’m not advocating doing it like this or making any statement of suitability. Don’t make or use anything like this unless you take full responsibility for health and safety. I’m not taking responsibility for your actions and I sure don’t want anyone interferring in my actions on the basis of freedom destroying nanny state health and safety. If you don’t like it then don’t use it! The main issue is the use of normal garden hose. I am taking the view that I am heating a pool which is filled with fresh water and will be emptied after the season. The water is circulated through the hose only a limited number of times over the season, is raised in temperature only a few degrees during normal use and is not actively drunk. It is, after all, the same water you use to water your vegetables with. It is important to use matt black paint to maximise the radiant heat capture. There is a noticeable increase in the pool temperature using these panels and turns swimming in it into a pleasurable experience. If you slow the flow rate down and fill a bucket with it on a sunny day you’ll see just how much heat is being added. It’s quite easy to reach temperatures you could bathe or shower in. Each panel is probably the equivalent of a kettle continually heating water all day long – and that would be very expensive! I run it at a reasonable flow rate so that the temperature at the return is raised to tepid. This reduces stress on the hose. There is no

How Solar Works:
There are no moving parts in solar cells to degrade performance over time. Solar cells are semiconductors. The sun’s rays, even on cloudy days, are absorbed by silicon material in the cells. This energy activates electrons allowing them to move freely – creating usable energy.

The solar electrical system is connected to the utility grid through a standard meter. It tracks net power usage and spins backward (producing credits) when production exceeds usage.

The inverter takes the DC current created by the solar panels and electronically converts it to AC power for use throughout your home.

If you finance your system, your monthly payment may be completely covered by the reduction in your electricity bill. From day one, a Marin Solar system adds value to your home, ensuring your decision makes financial sense both today and in the future. Should I remove solar panels or get a solar hot water heater?

December 25th, 2011 2 comments

Question by Rich C: Should I remove solar panels or get a solar hot water heater?
I just found out that my homeowners insurance company wants to charge me $ 300 more per year because I have some old solar panels on my roof. They were put on by the previous owners a long time ago I think. They are for a solar water heater but they aren’t connected to anything because I just have a regular water heater in my garage. They are ugly as hell and I would just as soon take them down as I’d rather have a tankless system eventually anyways. My insurance is already $ 3150 per year for a 140K house (Florida) so its high enough as it is. It seems stupid to pay $ 300 a year for something I’m not even using. Who can I call to take them down or can I do it myself or are solar water heaters cheap enough now that I should consider one?
